It’s believed in Japan that when a person folds 1,000 paper cranes, his/her wishes will come true.  It’s tragic what’s happening in that country.

While 15 visiting undergraduate students from Kinki University in Osaka, Japan, were busy creating collaborative art installations with University of the Arts students for the ”Mapping Experience: A Japan and UArts Exchange” exhibit, a massive earthquake and devastating tsunami struck their home country.

Local Philadelphia affiliate NBC-10 News was on hand at the March 14 opening reception to talk to the students about the disaster:

Originally intended to explore language, identity and cultural hybridity, “Mapping Experience” turned into a vital source of support for the student artists and three faculty members, who are all from an area of Japan not directly affected by the catastrophe.

Local NPR affiliate WHYY also featured the visiting Japanese students during its morning news program and on its NewsWorks portal:

“Mapping Experience: A Japan and UArts Exchange” will be on display through March 27 in Gallery One and the Sculpture Gallery in Hamilton Hall and in Gallery 817 in Anderson Hall.

wow! Alice in Wonderland shoes by N.Kirkwood!

Last week, we previewed a sketch of Nicholas Kirkwood’s Alice in Wonderland-inspired heels, made on commission for the French department store Printemps, which is giving over its windows to all things Alice through March. (Sad to say, they’re window-only—you’ll have to find another pair to wear to the theater.) For the installation, Kirkwood is joined by Ann Demeulemeester, Alexander McQueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, Chloé, Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, and Maison Martin Margiela, each of whom were given a window to fill as they saw fit. The windows went up this week in Paris. Below, Style.com takes a tour through the various Wonderlands and asks a few of the participating designers and design teams about their trip there.
